Here's good news on the nutrition front ... that is, if you're not on a strict low-carb diet and do not fear genetically modified food.

It seems that scientists in California have discovered how to "unlock" a gene in domestic wheat seeds that increases the plant's nutritional value. Called Gpc-B1 (can't they come up with sexier names for these things?), this gene can increase the iron, zinc and protein levels in the wheat kernels.

The scientists, who are associated with the Agricultural Research Service's Western Regional Research Center, based in Albany, California, hope their discovery will lead to improving the health of millions of malnourished people around the world. It could also improve the health of people in developed countries such as the U.S. where people generally are already getting their caloric needs met.

The scientists discovered Gpc-B1 in a wild type of wheat that grows in the Middle East, then they figured out that the gene controlled the level of iron, zinc and protein in the plant. Next they discovered that cultivated wheat has this same gene, only it is nonworking--"turned off." By sticking a cloned copy of the gene into cultivated wheat seeds, they found they could boost those critical nutrients by anywhere from 10 to 15 percent.

Pretty soon, some farmers could be growing wheat varieties that incorporate the cloned Gpc-B1 gene. But it's too soon to know when you'll be able to buy a loaf of bread made from naturally nutrition-enhanced wheat.

My diet already includes a wide range of 100-percent whole wheat breadstuffs, from cereal to pita pockets to tortillas to sandwich loafs. I am not one who can easily give up bread, but at least I know that my bread choices are near the top, nutritionally speaking. I look forward to being able to buy bread that is even better for me and my family, thanks to this breakthrough on the genetic front.

  • Drink a lot of water. Doctors say 6 to 8 glasses a day but if you did that, you'd be running to the toilet every hour. Still, taking a goodly amount is recommended. Tip: Bottled water or a home purifier is recommended. I have both a water purifier and a distiller for making distilled water.
  • Eats lots of fresh fruits and vegetables raw. Why? When you cook fruits or vegetables, the enzymes are killed and the nutritional value becomes limited. Plus, it's good for intestinal health with its plentiful amount of fiber. It makes you a "regular" guy or gal, in other words. Doctors recommend 40 grams of fiber a day, which is achievable by eating fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, and a herbal concoction of psyllium seed and slippery elm. The intestinal tract is one of the most neglected areas of one's health.
  • Keep to a minimum processed foods. Foods like pizzas, prepared foods like Stouffers, etc. should be limited. Packaged snack foods too.
  • Avoid margarine, hydrogenated oils, cheese, butter, full-fat dairy products, unskinned chicken, and vegetable shortening.
  • Limit your animal protein, substituting instead vegetable proteins.
  • Avoid mixed vegetable oils, corn oil, safflower and sunflower oils; use instead extra-virgin olive oil. (Safflower and sunflower oils that have high-oleic versions are okay.)
  • Avoid or limit high-fructose corn syrup.
  • Avoid milk products. Milk is bad for many reasons. Drink soy milk instead. That's what I do and I don't miss cow's milk at all.
  • Avoid alcohol. Okay, I know I've hit a nerve here! If you have to drink alcohol, drink wine, especially red wine as it has a lot of resveratrol in it. What is that? It's a naturally occuring substance found in fruits like red grapes, raspberries, and mulberries. It's also a powerful antioxidant helping to prevent many cancers.

Baby Boomer Nutritional Supplement
The crux of this article is what baby boomer nutritional supplements you should be taking and why.
  • Take Alpha-Lipoic Acid daily, around 100 mg (miligrams) to 400 mg a day. This is a powerful antioxidant that helps deter aging.
  • Drink decaffeniated green tea. This is a tea that has an abundance of powerful antioxidants. With a little bit of honey added, it doesn't taste that bad --- really! Try it and you'll see.
  • If you can, take resveratrol daily -- ideally in a pill form. Take molecularly distilled fish oil supplements. This is one of the cheapest baby boomer nutritional supplements available today. It has many health benefits as written about elsewhere in this site.
  • Take a multi vitamin supplement that has the necessary ingredients for the body to synthesize COQ10. It is not recommended to take a Co-enzyme Q10 supplement as most of them on the market are synthetic.

  • Drink or eat goji berries daily. In verifiable recorded history, the man who has lived the longest was Li Qing Yuen, who apparently lived to the age of 252 years (1678-1930). Goji berries are the most nutritionally dense food on the planet. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is also an energy supplement.
  • Take ginger. This versatile herb is used as a culinary agent but its main use is that it's a powerful herb.
  • Take calcium daily. Baby boomer females need 1,200 to 1,500 mg a day, men 1,200 per day.
  • Take Vitamins C, E, and carotenoids daily. Ideally, this should be in a good comprehensive dietary supplement. Consider taking a bee pollen supplement if you're not allergic to it. Bee pollen has every vitamin, mineral, enzyme, and co-nutrient in it and is a great baby boomer nutritional supplement.
  • Consider Ginseng. Ginseng is an aprodisiac, which might be good for some marriages :) but it's also loaded with nutrients.
